Luft
German for 'air'
An escape square made for the king, usually by advancing a pawn in front of it.
Making luft means playing a move like h3 (or …h6) so the castled king has a flight square and cannot be mated on the back rank.
It costs a tempo, so you make it at the right moment — not so early that you waste time, not so late that you are already mated.
Why it matters
One quiet pawn move can be the difference between a winning endgame and a back-rank disaster.
The mistake everyone makes
Making luft with the wrong pawn and creating a permanent weakness the opponent targets later.
