Back-rank mate

Checkmate on the back rank against a king trapped by its own pawns.

A castled king often sits behind three unmoved pawns. If a rook or queen reaches the back rank with check and the king has no escape square, it is mate — the pawns that were shelter become the prison.

The defence is simple prevention: give the king an escape square (luft) by nudging a pawn like h3/…h6 at a quiet moment.

Why it matters

It is one of the most frequent finishes in club and online chess, and the easiest to fall into when short of time.

The mistake everyone makes

Grabbing a pawn in the endgame while your own back rank is weak, and getting mated before you can enjoy it.
