Lucena position

The fundamental winning technique in rook endgames — 'building a bridge'.

You have a rook and a pawn one step from promoting, the enemy king cut off from the pawn. The winning method is to bring your king out from in front of the pawn and use your rook to block the checks — 'building a bridge' on the fourth rank.

It is the single most important winning position in rook endgames, which are the most common endgame of all.

Why it matters

Rook-and-pawn endings appear constantly, and Lucena is the technique that converts them. Know it and you win the endings you should; miss it and you draw won games.

The mistake everyone makes

Shuffling the king in front of the pawn forever, never building the bridge, and letting the defender check your king endlessly for a draw.
