About ChessRanger

ChessRanger is a free place to get better at chess. You play an engine that plays at your level, and every game is explained by a coach that remembers what you keep getting wrong — then you train exactly that.

What is here

How it works

The chess engine is Stockfish, and it runs in your own browser. Analysing a game does not mean uploading it anywhere, and the engine keeps working on a slow connection once it has loaded.

You do not need an account. Guests can play and train straight away, and everything they do is kept in their browser. A free account saves your games, ratings and progress to the server and syncs them across devices; it is also what lets the coach remember you from one session to the next.

Everything described on this page is free to use.

What the numbers mean

An engine evaluation is a search to a fixed depth, the ratings here are ChessRanger ratings rather than FIDE or online-site ratings, and the coach can be confidently wrong about a subtlety. What ChessRanger is spells out where each number comes from and where it is weakest.
