Title norm

A strong tournament result that counts toward earning an IM or GM title.

Titles like International Master and Grandmaster are earned by performing at a required level (a set performance rating) across a qualifying event, against enough titled and federation-diverse opponents. Such a result is a 'norm'.

A full title normally needs several norms plus a peak rating — for GM, three GM norms and a 2500 rating at some point.

Why it matters

Norms are the milestones of a competitive career; understanding them explains why players chase specific events and why round-by-round performance rating matters so much.

The mistake everyone makes

Assuming one good tournament earns a title — norms have strict conditions on opponents and length, and several are required.

Related terms

Elo rating
A number measuring playing strength; you gain points for beating higher-rated players and lose them for losing to lower-rated ones.
Swiss system
A tournament format that pairs players on equal scores each round without anyone being eliminated.
Blitz
A fast time control, usually 3–5 minutes per player for the whole game.
