Blitz

A fast time control, usually 3–5 minutes per player for the whole game.

Blitz sits between rapid (10+ minutes) and bullet (1–2 minutes). Games are decided as much by speed, pattern recognition, and clock management as by deep calculation.

Most online chess is blitz. It is superb for drilling openings and tactics through sheer volume, though it rewards fast habits that don't always transfer to slow play.

Why it matters

Knowing the time-control ladder — bullet, blitz, rapid, classical — helps you pick the format that trains what you want and read what a given rating means.

The mistake everyone makes

Judging your 'real' strength by your blitz rating alone; classical play tests calculation that blitz never asks for.
