Pawn lever

A pawn push that attacks an enemy pawn to open lines and get your pieces moving.

A lever is a pawn advance that offers a trade against an enemy pawn — like …c5 against d4, or f4 against e5 — so that files and diagonals open for your pieces. Closed positions are broken open precisely by finding and playing the right lever at the right moment.

The art is in the timing and the preparation: play a lever too early and you just create weaknesses; prepare it and it opens the position exactly where you're strongest.

Why it matters

In blocked middlegames nothing happens until a pawn lever opens a line — knowing your structure's levers is how you make a plan concrete.

The mistake everyone makes

Manoeuvring pieces endlessly in a closed position while never identifying the pawn break that would actually open it.
