Pawn endgame
Kings and pawns only — the most exact phase of chess, where a single tempo decides everything.
With only kings and pawns left, calculation is king. Concepts that are guidelines earlier become hard rules: the opposition, key squares, the rule of the square, triangulation and zugzwang all decide the result exactly. There's no piece to bail you out, so a miscount loses on the spot.
Because every pawn ending reduces to concrete counting, they're the most important endgames to know cold — and the reason strong players will happily trade into a king-and-pawn ending they've calculated to a win.
Pawn endings are pure calculation with no margin for error — knowing the standard techniques converts wins and saves draws that intuition alone would miss.
Trading into a king-and-pawn ending 'because I'm up a pawn' without counting the opposition and key squares — often it's a draw, or even lost.
