Pawn breakthrough

Sacrificing one or two pawns to force a passed pawn through the enemy line.

The classic breakthrough is a pawn ending where a phalanx of pawns cracks a blocking line by sacrifice — the textbook three-versus-three where …b5!!, …a5 or …c5 clears a path and one pawn queens by force. It looks like giving material away, but the resulting passer decides the game.

The technique is pure calculation: you count the tempi and check that the runner promotes before the defender can stop it or make a queen of their own. Spotting a breakthrough turns a 'blocked, equal' pawn ending into a win.

Why it matters

A breakthrough can win an ending that looks completely blocked — recognising the pawn sacrifice that opens a path is decisive endgame knowledge.

The mistake everyone makes

Assuming a pawn front is impassable and shuffling the king, when a well-timed pawn sacrifice would smash through and promote.
