Breakthrough
A pawn sacrifice that forces a passed pawn through a seemingly solid pawn wall.
The classic pattern: three pawns against three (or similar), where pushing the middle pawn as a sacrifice clears the way for a neighbour to promote. The famous 'three connected pawns beat a wall' breakthrough looks like magic but is pure calculation.
Recognising a breakthrough — for or against you — is essential in pawn endings, where one tempo and one passed pawn decide the game.
A breakthrough turns a 'blocked, drawish' pawn ending into a win; missing one throws away the point.
Assuming a pawn wall is safe and trading into the ending, only to be hit by a breakthrough sacrifice that queens by force.
