Building a bridge

The winning technique in the Lucena position — use your rook to shield your king from checks.

In the Lucena position (rook and a pawn on the 7th vs a rook, the stronger king in front of the pawn) the winning method is to 'build a bridge': place your rook on the fourth rank so that, when the enemy rook starts checking your king out from behind the pawn, your own rook can interpose and cut off the checks.

It's the single most important winning technique in rook endings — the position it solves comes up constantly, and without the bridge the extra pawn is only a draw.

The Lucena is the gateway winning position of rook endgames; the bridge is the exact method that turns the extra pawn into a full point.

The mistake everyone makes

Pushing the pawn or marching the king out too early and getting checked forever, letting a winning position slip to a draw.
