Brilliancy

A game or move of exceptional beauty — usually a surprising, sound sacrifice.

A brilliancy is chess as art: a move or combination so unexpected and elegant that it wins a special prize. The best ones are deep sacrifices whose point only becomes clear several moves later.

Historically, tournaments awarded 'brilliancy prizes' for the most beautiful game — the Evergreen and Immortal games are the archetypes.

Why it matters

Studying brilliancies trains your eye for the spectacular resource — and reminds you that the objectively best move is sometimes also the most beautiful.
