1.e4 — the open games
Halloween Gambit
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nxe5ECO C46
A shock sacrifice out of the Four Knights: White gives up a knight on e5 to chase Black's pieces back with pawns and grab the centre. Objectively unsound, it's a notorious surprise weapon that can overwhelm an unprepared opponent in a blitz game.
Key ideas
- After 4.Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4 White drives the knight back and rolls the e- and f-pawns forward.
- White bets that the big pawn centre and lead in development outweigh the sacrificed piece.
- With accurate defence Black keeps the extra piece and consolidates — so it's a gamble, not a main line.
