Black's most combative reply. Instead of copying White in the centre, Black fights for it from the side and plays for a win with the extra central pawn. Sharp, deeply analysed, and hugely popular.
Key ideas
- …c5 trades a wing pawn for a centre pawn, giving Black a half-open c-file to attack on.
- Main lines (Najdorf, Dragon, Sveshnikov) are razor-sharp and heavily theoretical.
- The Anti-Sicilians (Alapin, Closed, Rossolimo) let White sidestep the theory.
