The ultra-provocative 1.g4 grabs kingside space and opens the bishop to g2, at the cost of loosening White's own king. Objectively dubious but a shock weapon that drags opponents into unfamiliar chaos.
Key ideas
- 1.g4 and Bg2 hit the long light diagonal and the b7/d5 squares.
- White often follows with c4 and h3 to hold the g4-pawn and open lines.
- Black gets a good game with calm central play (…d5) and by exploiting the weakened white kingside.
