1.d4 — the closed and Indian games
Colle-Zukertort System
1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 e6 4.Bd3 c5 5.b3ECO D04–D05
A reliable system-based opening: White develops the same way against almost anything — Nf3, e3, Bd3, b3 and Bb2 — aiming a battery at Black's kingside. Easy to learn and hard to refute, it trades opening ambition for a smooth setup and a ready-made attacking plan.
Key ideas
- The b3/Bb2 and Bd3 setup points both bishops at the kingside for a later e4 break and attack.
- White plays by plan rather than by memorised lines — the same structure works against many Black tries.
- The thematic e3–e4 break, once prepared, opens the position toward Black's king.
