White marries the Queen's Gambit to a kingside fianchetto: the g2-bishop rakes the long diagonal and squeezes the light squares for the whole game. A positional, low-risk weapon that has become a favourite at the very top.
Key ideas
- The fianchettoed bishop on g2 gives lasting pressure on the a8–h1 diagonal and Black's queenside.
- In the Open Catalan Black grabs the c4-pawn; White often lets it go for a lead in development and long-term pressure.
- A signature idea is Qc2 and Rd1 with a later e4 break to open lines for the bishop pair.
