Blackmar-Diemer Gambit
1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.f3ECO D00
White sacrifices a central pawn for rapid development and an open f-file aimed at Black's king. A cult attacking weapon: theory says Black is fine, but over the board the initiative and the ready-made kingside assault win a lot of games below master level.
Key ideas
- 4.f3 opens the f-file and prises open the centre; after …exf3 Nxf3 White is fully mobilised.
- White castles queenside or throws pieces at f7/h7 while Black is still developing.
- Black's job is to give the pawn back at the right moment and reach a safe, slightly better ending.
