Zwischenzug

German for 'in-between move'

An unexpected in-between move played before the 'obvious' recapture.

When your opponent expects a routine recapture, a zwischenzug inserts a more forcing move first — usually a check or a bigger threat — and changes the whole exchange in your favour.

It works because chess is not obliged to be polite: you do not have to recapture immediately if something stronger is available.

Why it matters

Whole tactical sequences fall apart if you or your opponent has an in-between check. Always look for forcing moves before assuming the recapture is forced.

The mistake everyone makes

Auto-recapturing because it 'feels' forced, and missing a zwischenzug that would have won more.
