Transposition

Reaching the same position by a different move order.

Two different sequences of moves arrive at the identical position — the game has transposed. Openings are a web of transpositions: an English can become a Queen's Gambit, a Réti a King's Indian Attack.

Understanding transpositions lets you steer toward structures you like and dodge lines you don't, using move order as a weapon.

Why it matters

Move-order tricks — offering a transposition the opponent must accept or decline — are how strong players avoid preparation and reach their pet structures.

The mistake everyone makes

Memorising a line by rote and being lost when the same position arrives via a different move order.
