Tabiya

A standard, well-known starting position that theory branches out from.

A tabiya is a tabula — a reference position — that arises again and again in an opening, the point from which players actually start thinking. Much of opening study is really learning the plans in the key tabiyas.

The word comes from the old shatranj custom of setting up a known position before play began.

Why it matters

Knowing the tabiya of your opening — and the typical plans from it — is worth more than a long memorised line that your opponent sidesteps.

The mistake everyone makes

Learning moves instead of the tabiya's ideas, then having no plan the moment the position is reached.
