Smothered mate

A knight delivers mate to a king trapped by its own pieces.

The king is boxed in by its own men, and a knight — the one piece that cannot be blocked — gives a check that is also mate. The classic setup uses a queen sacrifice on g8/g1 to force a rook onto that square, sealing the king in before Nf7#/Nf2#.

It is one of the most satisfying patterns to land because it feels like a magic trick: you give up your queen and mate with a lone knight.

Why it matters

It is a recurring finish in sharp games and a favourite in puzzles — worth knowing on sight.

The mistake everyone makes

Castling into a smothered-mate net and then having no luft (escape square) for the king.
