Promotion race

Both sides pushing passed pawns to queen first — often decided by a single tempo or a check.

When each side has a runner, the game becomes a race to promote. The winner is usually whoever queens with tempo — giving check, or making a new queen that stops the opponent's pawn or forks their king and fresh queen.

Counting the race precisely (who's a move ahead, and whether the new queen comes with check) is pure, concrete calculation.

Why it matters

Endgames constantly come down to a promotion race; miscounting by one tempo — or missing that the new queen checks — turns a win into a loss.

The mistake everyone makes

Queening a move 'too slow' and letting the opponent promote with check, or making a queen that hangs to the opponent's new one.
