Poisoned pawn

A pawn that looks free but whose capture leads to trouble — often a trapped piece.

Some pawns are left hanging on purpose. Grab them and your piece (usually the queen) gets chased, trapped, or leaves your king fatally behind in development. The famous Najdorf Poisoned Pawn (…Qxb2) is a whole theory of who's right.

Sometimes the pawn really is poisoned; sometimes it's a genuine free meal. Telling them apart is the art.

Why it matters

Whole opening debates and countless games turn on whether a tempting pawn can be safely taken — the question 'what do I give up to grab this?' is always worth asking.

The mistake everyone makes

Snatching a wing pawn with the queen in the opening and watching it get hunted while your king sits in the centre.
