Mysterious rook move

Placing a rook on a closed file in anticipation of it opening later.

Nimzowitsch's term for a rook move that seems to do nothing — the file is closed — but prepares for the moment the file opens, or discourages the opponent's freeing pawn break because the rook is already waiting for it.

It's prophylaxis with a rook: you position it against a plan the opponent hasn't played yet.

Understanding mysterious rook moves lifts your play from reacting to open files to anticipating them — controlling a break before it happens.

The mistake everyone makes

Only moving rooks to files that are already open, and being a tempo too late when the position finally cracks open.
