Connected rooks

Two rooks on the same rank or file with nothing between them, defending each other.

Once you've castled and cleared your back rank, connecting the rooks — putting them where they protect one another — is a sign development is complete. Connected rooks double easily on open files and support each other's invasion.

Reaching this point is a useful checklist: minor pieces out, king safe, queen off the back rank, rooks connected.

Why it matters

Connected rooks are the mark of a finished opening and the launchpad for pressure down open files — a simple sign your pieces are working together.

The mistake everyone makes

Grabbing an open file with one rook while the other sits passive and undefended, instead of connecting and doubling them.
