Rook on the seventh

A rook on the opponent's second rank — attacking pawns and boxing in the king.

A rook that reaches the seventh rank (the enemy's second) gobbles the pawns still sitting there and pins the king to the back rank. Two rooks on the seventh — 'pigs on the seventh' — are often decisive.

Getting a rook to the seventh is a standard reward for winning an open or half-open file.

Why it matters

The seventh-rank rook is one of the classic winning advantages, especially in the endgame where those pawns can't be defended.

The mistake everyone makes

Trading off your active seventh-rank rook for a passive enemy piece, giving up the pressure you worked to create.
