Isolani
an isolated queen's pawn (IQP)
An isolated d-pawn — dynamic and space-giving in the middlegame, a target in the endgame.
The isolani (usually a d4 or d5 pawn with no friendly pawns on the c- or e-files) is the great two-sided imbalance. Its owner gets open lines, the e5/e4 outpost and attacking chances; the defender blockades it on d5/d4 and aims to win it in a simplified ending.
Whole opening systems — the Tarrasch, many QGD lines — are debates about whether the isolani's activity outweighs its weakness.
Knowing which side the isolani favours tells you whether to keep pieces on (attacker) or trade them off (blockader).
As the attacker, trading into an endgame where the isolani is simply weak; as the defender, letting it advance and free the position.
