Counterplay
Active play that creates your own threats instead of passively defending.
When your opponent is attacking, the best defence is often offence: generate threats of your own so they must spend time on defence rather than pressing. That is counterplay.
It usually comes from a pawn break, a file for a rook, or play against a weakness on the other side of the board — activity that makes the position a two-way fight.
Pure defence rarely holds against good attackers. Finding counterplay — the source of your own activity — is what turns defence into a real contest.
Sitting still and answering only the opponent's threats until you are slowly squeezed to death with no play of your own.
