How to play a stronger opponent (and actually give yourself a chance)

Facing a player rated well above you feels like a different game entirely — and in one sense it is: you probably won't out-calculate them, and you definitely won't out-theory them if they've prepared. What you can do is change the kind of fight you're in, and refuse to hand them the game before they've earned it.

Aim for complexity, not correctness

A stronger player's biggest edge is precision in complicated positions — but complication cuts both ways. A messy, unclear position with chances for both sides gives you more practical winning chances than a simple, 'objectively balanced' one where their technique just grinds you down. You're not trying to prove the position is good; you're trying to make it one where mistakes are equally likely on both sides.

Make them solve problems, don't just react to theirs

It's tempting to spend the whole game defending and hoping. Instead, look for moves that pose your opponent a real question — a pawn break, a piece sacrifice for activity, a threat they have to spend time on. Even a stronger player can misjudge an unfamiliar problem under a clock; a passive game gives them nothing to misjudge.

Don't panic when they play something unexpected

A confident, fast move from a strong player often triggers a worse move from the opponent, purely from nerves — not because the move was actually that dangerous. Slow down exactly when you feel rushed. Reassess the position on its own merits rather than on the rating difference; the board doesn't know who's supposed to win.

Play the position, not the opponent's reputation

The single biggest practical mistake against a stronger player is playing scared — avoiding good moves because they feel 'too ambitious' for the matchup. Play the board in front of you. Ratings win statistics over hundreds of games; they don't play any individual move for your opponent.
